Votive Celebrations St Jean de Crieulon June 2018

This patronal festival, still called vote or vogue, is specific to the south of France. It is traditional in Provence, Drôme Provençale, Ardèche, in Languedoc (Gard, Hérault).

The votes, initially, were always related to the saint's day of the parish. They spread over the whole summer and attracted to the village all the youth of the neighboring communes who arrived in band and on foot. These festivities, according to their date, marked either a truce in the big works of the fields, or the joy of the first harvests returned.

Traditionally, a votive festival must include fairground attractions, a shared meal in the public square, a large free raffle, a petanque contest and a night ball or balleti.
